Prof. Mohan Matthen Awarded Partnership Development Grant

Professor Mohan Matthen

The Department is pleased to announce the establishment of a new research partnership to study the senses. The participating institutions are the Departments of Philosophy at Toronto (Principal Investigator: Mohan Matthen), Harvard (Co-Investigator: Susanna Siegel), MIT (Co-Investigator: Alex Byrne), the Centre for the Study of the Senses at the University of London (Co-Investigator: Barry Smith), and the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience at the University of Glasgow (Co-Investigator: Fiona Macpherson). Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and by the partner institutions, this will be a philosophy-led, interdisciplinary, international network of researchers to study how the brain/mind integrates information from the senses.  The five partners aim to bring together the leading strands of work in philosophy and the sensory sciences, bring it to immediate, timely, and wide discussion in all the relevant disciplines.  Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from the partner units will team up to initiate wide web-based discussions among qualified professionals by creating reports and position papers subsequent to each workshop. The partnership will provide graduate students unprecedented opportunities for working with senior researchers in all five partner institutions, as well as career-sustaining networks with their peers across the network.

Congratulations, Mohan (et al)!

UPDATE:  The Network Centre for Research on the Senses now seeks to appoint a philosopher of perception to a two-year post-doctoral fellowship. See http://philosophy.utoronto.ca/undergraduate/utm/continuously-posted-notices/post-doc%20ad.doc/view for details.
