The 2013 winner of the Martha Lile Love Award for Excellence in Teaching Philosophy, chosen from among graduate instructors who taught courses on any of the three University of Toronto campuses between September 2012 and August 2013, is

Brian Embry
PHL 210F 17th Century Philosophy

St. George campus

Summer 2013

The Martha Lile Love Committee was impressed by Brian’s thoughtful course design: students were assigned to read some of the lesser lights of the period in order to highlight the problematic aspects of the canonical authors.  Weekly writing assignments kept the students reading and engaged.  If, as one student commented, students only actively learn when working on an assignment, Brian succeeded in keeping his students learning for the duration of the course.  And in addition to promoting a high attendance rate, Brian’s methods had the salutary effect of producing an exceptionally strong student evaluation response rate.  Congratulations, Brian.

Finally, the Department extends its appreciation to all Graduate Instructors for their excellent work during the past year, as well as Faculty Teaching Mentors for their invaluable advice and classroom observations.
