Research interests: ontology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of logic, philosophy of language, philosophy of science and of social sciences, history of philosophy (early modern [esp. Hume], 19th century [Mill, Spencer, British idealists]). Recent publications: Hume's Defence of Causal Inference (1997); Logic and the Methodology of Science in Early Modern Thought (1999); The Logic and Methodology of Science and Pseudoscience (2000); Socrates, Lucretius, Camus -- Two Philosophical Traditions on Death (2001) Recently elected vice president and president designate of the International Society for the Study of Human Ideas of Ultimate Reality and Meaning
