"Genealogical Critiques of Moral Realism"
ABSTRACT: There has recently been a set of sharp criticisms directed against moral realism. These criticisms all have the same form: given realism, and given what we know about the evolutionary origins of our moral faculties -- roughly, whatever interconnected, internal mechanisms and processes lead us to have the moral beliefs we do -- there is no reason to think that these faculties are reliable, and plenty of reason to think that they are not. I reconstruct what I take to be the central line of reasoning behind a variety of such critiques, and then try to undermine these critiques.
