Learning Technologies
Getting Started
The following are technologies that are commonly used by faculty at the university:
UTM Submit
UTM Submit is a web application, developed by the University of Toronto Mississauga Computing Services Department, which enables faculty to allow their students to submit assignment files online. As an instructor, you would create an assignment within your course by first requesting a UTM Submit account for your course by emailing admin@utm.utoronto.ca. Then you would log in at www.utm.utoronto.ca/submit with your UTM userid or UTORid and password, and you would set the parameters for the assignment and the submission of files. Students use their UTORid and password to upload their files. Instructors or TAs may view or download and grade the papers. Students access their graded papers once they have been uploaded by the instructor or TA.

How do I create an account for my TA?
If you want an account created for your TA(s). First your TA(s) must have a UTM userid or UTORid and password. In addition, you need to request a UTM Submit TA account for your course from Computing Services by emailing admin@utm.utoronto.ca. Please note that:
· TAs can only see the contents of the files handed in, and download assignments after the close date.
· TAs cannot create or edit assignments.
· TAs have access to the class list.
More detailed instructions for TAs are available at
http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/~w3itl/submit_ta.pdf
Where can I get support?
The University of Toronto Mississauga Library offers basic training for faculty and TAs on how to use UTM Submit: email simone.laughton@utoronto.ca to arrange for an appointment. Technical support is provided by Computing Services: email admin@utm.utoronto.ca.
What about using Turnitin.com with UTM Submit?
Also, it is possible to use UTM Submit with Turnitin.com. Turnitin.com is a tool that can be used to help detect plagiarism. If you are planning on using UTM Submit with Turnitin.com, you will need to create a Turnitin.com account first. In addition, you must advise students that you will be using UTM Submit in your course on your syllabus and offer them an alternative to the use of Turnitin.com. To use this service, instructors will first need to create a user profile at http://www.turnitin.com/static/home.html. Following this step you will need to join the University of Toronto's account. The University of Toronto’s account number and password are available from the Office of Teaching Advancement at 416-946-8585. For more information regarding using Turnitin.com at the University of Toronto, please visit the Office of Teaching Advancement website at http://www.utoronto.ca/ota/programmes.html.

Microsoft PowerPoint
What does this do? PowerPoint is a desktop program for creating presentations. These presentations are usually projected on a screen in a classroom or meeting room in place of traditional overheads or slides. PowerPoint is part of most versions of Microsoft Office, the suite of software that also includes Word & Excel among other programs.
Accessing the Software PowerPoint is available separately or as part of Microsoft Office at special pricing for members of the University of Toronto community. Visit http://www.utoronto.ca/ic/softdist/detail/msselect.htm for details
Getting Training/Support The University of Toronto Mississauga Library offers basic instructional technology sessions, including PowerPoint, to faculty and TAs. These sessions may be offered either in small groups as a face-to-face workshop (email:
f2f@utm.utoronto.ca; website:
http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/library/instruction/facultyf2f.html) or one-to-one sessions (email: w3itl@utm.utoronto.ca).
The Resource Centre for Academic Technology (RCAT) also offers basic PowerPoint training as a part of their Microsoft Applications workshop series.
Visit http://rcat.utoronto.ca for a current schedule of workshops.
Using It With My Students Projection requires a digital projector connected to a computer in the classroom where you want to show the presentation. This is not the same as a traditional overhead projector.
PowerPoint presentations can be converted so they can be accessed on the Web. At UTM, you can send a conversion request to http://support.utm.utoronto.ca.
Turnitin
What does this do? Turnitin is a web-based system that makes it easy to identify students who submit unoriginal work, and acts as a deterrent to stop plagiarism before it starts. Instructors using this tool set up virtual classes to which students submit their assignments electronically. Each submitted paper is checked for textual similarity against billions of web pages and millions of resources stored in the Turnitin database. Instructors receive originality reports which highlight suspicious passages in each submitted assignment.
Accessing the Software Turnitin is available to all University of Toronto instructors and students at no cost. To use this service instructors will first need to establish a user profile at http://www.turnitin.com/n_newuser1.asp. Following this step you will need to join the University of Toronto's account. UofT’s account number and password are available from the Office of Teaching Advancement at 416-946-8585.
Getting Training/Support Email help is available on a 24 hour basis from helpdesk@turnitin.com. The Office of Teaching Advancement (OTA) acts as the University administrator for Turnitin and will provide support and training for those wishing to use this service. It is recommended that all instructors read the conditions of use, available on the OTA web site, before adopting this service for your course. Please contact the Office of Teaching Advancement for any assistance regarding Turnitin and visit their web site at www.utoronto.ca/ota for various user guides and answers to frequently asked questions.
Using It With My Students Prior to submitting papers, students will need to create their own user profile and can do so from http://www.turnitin.com/n_newuser1.asp. The OTA has developed a one-page guide to assist students in setting up an account and submitting papers. Instructors may wish to provide copies of this guide, available on the OTA web site at http://www.utoronto.ca/ota, to their students.
Since Turnitin requires students to submit their work electronically they will need access to the Internet and a web-browser.
