André Lanoue completed his doctoral thesis in February 2021 under the supervision of Jens Halfwassen at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. After the premature passing of Professor Halfwassen in February 2020, André finished the remainder of his thesis with Halfwassen’s former student Tobias Dangel. His thesis studied the relation between dramaturgical form and philosophical content in Plato’s dialogues. The second evaluator for his dissertation was Thomas Alexander Szlezák.
He completed his B.A. and his M.A. at the Université de Montréal. His Master’s thesis, on the Phaedo and the Symposium, was supervised by Jean Grondin.
His current postdoctoral project at the University of Toronto, under the supervision of Lloyd Gerson, asks whether the metaphysical principle of the One, attributed to Plato by Aristotle and the subsequent peripatetic doxography, is identifiable with the Good of the Republic and with the first hypothesis of the Parmenides. The function of Oneness in Plato’s ethics and politics, an analysis of his metaphysics and a comparison with the metaphysical stances of his successors, Speusippus and Xenocrates, are the central themes of his current project.
Both his PhD and his Postdoctoral studies were funded by the FRQ (Fonds de Recherche du Québec).
