SUMMARY:PCU 2023 Symposium on Love
DESCRIPTION:The University of Toronto Philosophy Course Union (PCU) invites you to their annual Symposium on Love! On the menu: two talks and a workshop on that most elusive feeling. \nProgram\nAlex Koo\, “The (Game) Theory of Love” \nHow can mathematics guide us in our relationships? What can mathematics tell us about monogamy? Is 1 really the loneliest number? In this talk\, we will be taking a lighthearted mathematical look at the nature of love with some surprisingly deep philosophical implications. No proficiency in mathematics is required\, but some experience with love is an asset. \nZoe Anthony\, “Forget ‘Forgetting Being’—We Have Forgotten Loving” \nI argue that our rarefied\, image-saturated\, one-dimensional\, dating-app-loving society has numbed us to the joys that come from the unexpected encounters\, and that the pandemic has exacerbated our social trust to such a degree that the art of loving is in jeopardy of being lost. What we need is not exactly new a conception of love\, but to practice a fundamental ontology of loving. To give love again\, we have to think about what it means to be in love. This might require that we think about who we are when we love\, and if we would want to “swipe right” on that image of ourselves\, or not. \nSophia Whicher\, “Love Crafting” (workshop) \nIn this mini workshop\, we will discuss a few prominent conceptions of love as presented by UBC philosopher Carrie Jenkins in her book\, What Love Is and What It Could Be\, and then participants will have an opportunity to critically reflect on what love (of any kind) is and . . . we’ll make a department Valentine’s decoration with our answers!
