University Professor Emeritus Wayne Sumner has just published an article in the Canadian Journal of Philosophy called “Defending Morality.” It is a revised version of his recent Canadian Philosophical Association’s keynote address in June 2026. His article considers the work of Ronnie de Sousa, another Emeritus Professor from the department, whose book, Why It Is OK to Be Amoral, was published in 2024.
Wayne Sumner’s professional teaching and research have focused on ethical theory, applied ethics (especially bioethics), political philosophy, and philosophy of law. Over the years, he has published eight books, six in these philosophical areas and two in legal history. His most recent books include Prairie Justice: The Hanging of Mike Hack (University of Toronto Press, 2024) and Deciding on Death: Rodriguez, Carter, and Medically Assisted Dying in Canada (UBC Press, 2025).
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the recipient of the 2009 Molson Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities from the Canada Council for the Arts.
