Do individual choices make a difference to large-scale problems (think global warming or the spread of a pandemic)? Is there such a thing as collective impact or does an individual’s relative insignificance mean that we can all do as we please? These are some of the questions our department’s Julia Nefsky considered in a 20-minute conversation with Theron Pummer, a philosopher at the University of St. Andrews in the UK and the director of the Centre for Ethics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs (CEPPA). This talk forms part of the first series of CEPPA Chats, in which renowned scholars from around the world discuss their area of expertise with a member of CEPPA in a conversational, accessible way. The series launched on April 27 and will end on June 22 with Cécile Fabre (University of Oxford), whom we look forward to welcoming next year to give the Roseman Lecture. Take a virtual trip to the sunny quad of St. Andrew’s and listen to Dr. Nefsky’s insights.
