The Scandal of Philosophy: Heidegger on External World Skepticism

Talk Abstract

I argue that if we come to understand Heidegger’s claim that we are fundamentally what he calls Being-in-the-world (in-der-Welt-Sein), then Cartesian anxieties about the existence of the “external world” cease to be coherent. This is because the world, as a context of meaning which allows entities to appear, cannot be interrogated in terms of the worldly relations (such as doubting) that it enables us to take up with beings found in that world.
