Talk Title

Conceptions of Logic: Universalist vs. Specialist, Critical vs. Demonstrative, Philosophical vs. Mathematical, and Logocentric vs. Metalogical

Talk Abstract

The talk will distinguish four conceptions of logic: those of Leibniz, Kant, Frege and Early Wittgenstein. It will do so by distinguishing the different ways they combine answers to the following questions: Are philosophy and logic two things or one? Logic and mathematics — two things or one? Can one step outside of logic and regard it from sideways on? Or does logic not have an “outside”? Is logic a science and, if so, of what? Is it a special science with its own proprietary subject matter or an absolutely general science — in which case what does it investigate? And if it is not a science at all, then what form of understanding does it yield? With the aid of these questions we will compare and contrast the the fundamentally different conceptions of logic found in our four thinkers with each other and all four with more familiar contemporary conceptions of logic.

For questions or to register, please contact Ethan Millar-Virkutis.

The Kant & Post-Kantian German Idealism Group is a a subgroup of the History of Philosophy Research Group, which focuses on European philosophy in Kant and post-Kantian traditions.
