Avia Pasternak’s research focuses on questions of political philosophy and public affairs. She writes on collective responsibility in democracies, on the duties of citizens in unjust democracies, and on the permissibility of violent protest.
Before coming to the University of Toronto, she was an associate professor in Political Theory in the Department of Political Science, University College London (UCL), having joined UCL in 2014. Before that she worked as a lecturer at the University of Essex, in the Politics Department, and held postdoctoral positions at Stanford University and UCL. She earned her DPhil in Politics from Oxford University, where she studied at Nuffield College.
Her book, Responsible Citizens, Irresponsible States: Should Citizens Pay for Their States’ Wrongdoings?, was published with Oxford University Press (2021).
