Before coming to Toronto, Ulysse Chaintreuil was Attaché Temporaire d’Enseignement et de Recherche (roughly, assistant professor in France) at the Paris Nanterre University. He obtained an international PhD at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and at the University Ca’Foscari of Venice in 2022. UlysseChaintreuil’s research focuses on Aristotle’s Metaphysics. His first book is about Aristotelian hylemorphism (L’Unité de la forme, L’ontologie d’Aristote et le défi de la complexité, Classiques Garnier, Paris, 2024). He has also published several articles on the Aristotelian theory of definition in the theory of substance.
He is now working on the way Aristotle thinks the concept of unity in his ontology. He is particularly interested in Book Iota of the Metaphysics, and, more broadly, in the central role played by the notion of measure in the Stagirite’s thought. He is also interested in the interactions between Aristotelian theories of science and language, substance theory and Aristotelian ontology.
