Postdoctoral Fellow

Biography:

  • PhD Philosophy, ETH Zurich

Jelscha Schmid is a postdoctoral fellow working with Owen Ware. Before coming to the University of Toronto, Schmid was an Akademische Rätin at the University of Heidelberg, and will resume the position in 2026. Schmid’s projects in metaphilosophy converge on the thesis that Kant, Maimonides, Fichte, and Schelling all studied and adapted the experimental and modelling methods of the natural sciences of their time to solve problems internal to philosophy, i.e., metaphilosophical and epistemological problems.

Schmid’s current projects in the philosophy of mind revolve around Fichte’s engagement with the problem of other minds, arguing that in his Jena writings Fichte discovers a new version of the problem of other minds–the moral problem of other minds, which finds its proper solution in the System of Ethics (1798).
