Nick Halme, 300w

Position:

Graduate Student

Campus:

St. George,

Biography:

  • BA Honours (Philosophy), University of British Columbia.

Nick is a PhD student in the Philosophy Department, and is affiliated with the CSAMP program. Nick is particularly interested in the relation between ontology and epistemology in ancient Greek philosophy. Thus far, Nick has focused his attention on the “empiricist” commitments of Sextus Empiricus and their relation to his supposed ethical program of tranquility, and on Aristotle’s ethical epistemology. While Nick’s research focus is firmly set upon Greek thought, he is also interested in the historical philosophies of the Indian subcontinent, of the Islamic world, and of the Chinese tradition. In conjunction with these interests in ancient thought, Nick is also concerned with the philosophy of science, insofar as thinkers such as Kuhn, Feyerabend, and Hacking have much to say about the implicit ontological commitments which might be thought to inform the methodology of any theoretical inquiry.
