Downing Memorial Professor of Philosophy and the chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Virginia, works on 17th- and 18th-century European philosophy, with a special interest in figures such as Gassendi, Locke, and Shepherd and topics such as causation, freedom, rationality, and canon formation.
