PhD student Emma McClure currently serves as the president of our department’s Graduate Philosophy Students’ Union (GPSU), but her participation in the governance of the philosophy community is about to extend well past U of T.
Emma is one of the newest appointees to the American Philosophical Association’s Graduate Student Council, and will serve a two-year term starting July 1, 2018. The GSC is a crucial part of the APA, serving to connect philosophy graduate students to the APA by reporting on issues of interest, concern, and relevance to philosophy graduate students.
“I’m excited about working with graduate students from other universities,” says Emma. “I hope to use our shared knowledge to improve the student experience at the APA—especially the experience of students from marginalized populations. I also hope to learn from other graduate students about effective changes they have made within their home departments and to bring those ideas back to U of T.”
Emma is one of four new appointees that make up the 12-person GSC, joined in her new role by Sahar Joakim (Saint Louis University), Savannah Pearlman (Indiana University, Bloomington), and Kyle Scott (University of California, Irvine). Emma’s research interests are influenced by her interest in literature, and include metaethics, value theory, and the history of philosophy, especially the Scottish Enlightenment.
