For 2019–2020, the Jackman Humanities Institute (JHI) chose “Strange Weather” as the annual theme for its Circle of Fellows. Two of our undergraduates, Olivia Smith and Zachary Rosen, spent the academic year as JHI Undergraduate Fellows in the Humanities.

Smith, a fourth-year student double-majoring in Philosophy and Peace, Conflict, and Justice Studies, used the fellowship to examine the concept of state sovereignty as it intersects with environmental ethics and the current climate crisis. In a spotlight interview with the JHI, she speaks about why she decided to apply to become a fellow in the first place and reflects on how the experience has informed and transformed her work.

Rosen, who studies Philosophy and History, likewise cast a critical eye on the nexus between the climate crisis and state sovereignty, in his case investigating the fine balance necessary between an interest in meaningful sovereignty over natural resources and the desire to conserve these resources to prevent environmental collapse. Read his thoughts on the JHI fellowship and the opportunities it provided him.

Applications are open for the 2020–2021 JHI Undergraduate Fellowships, this year focused around the theme of “Collectives.” The deadline for submission is Thursday, April 30, at midnight, and you can find further information on the application requirements and process on the JHI website.
