UTM Department of Philosophy

Welcome to UTM Philosophy!

Welcome to the Department of Philosophy at UTM! UTM philosophy is part of U of T’s tri-campus philosophy department, recognized as one of the top places to study philosophy in the English-speaking world.

Philosophers address deep and enduring questions about the nature of reality, the mind, knowledge, and morality. When you study philosophy, you develop valuable skills like critical thinking and logical reasoning, and you get to put these skills to use in deciding what to think about perplexing and important topics, like ‘Can machines think?,’ ‘Do we have free will?,’ and ‘Is morality objective?’ At UTM, students can study with world-class scholars in a wide variety of areas of philosophy such as the history of philosophy, ethics and political philosophy, epistemology (the theory of knowledge), metaphysics (the theory of reality), philosophy of language, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, and logic.

We are lucky to have an exceptionally active and engaged undergraduate association, the Philosophy Academic Society (PAS). Learn more about them here.
