We are delighted to announce that an alumnus of the department, Dr. Charles W. Mills (PhD 1985), has received the 2021 Benjamin E. Lippincott Award, a recognition given biannually by the American Political Science Association. The honour recognizes a work of exceptional quality by a living political theorist that is still considered significant after a period of at least 15 years since the original publication date. Mills, a distinguished professor of Philosophy at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, won the award (which also carries a $5,000 cash prize) for The Racial Contract, initially published in 1997 by Cornell University Press.
Mills works in the general area of social and political philosophy, particularly in oppositional political theory as centered on class, gender, and race. He has authored more than a hundred journal articles, book chapters, comments and replies, as well as six books. The Racial Contract was his first, and it won a Myers Outstanding Book Award for the study of bigotry and human rights in America. It has been translated into Korean and Turkish.
Congratulations, Professor Mills, on this well-deserved recognition!
