Talk Title
The “Rules-Based” International Order and Permanent War
Talk Abstract
There is a wide-spread view that Donald Trump’s presidency has threatened the so-called rules-based global order that emerged after the Second World War. The most hopeful liberal defenders of this view argue that this period was uniquely peaceful and prosperous, and that Trump’s resurgent nationalism threatens the legal and ethical framework making this success possible. My talk will explore the political-economic and ethical grounds for dissenting from this liberal interpretation of the period between 1945 and 2016, as well as the degree and extent of Trump’s divergence from the deeper rules of the global capitalist system.
