PHL1 Mentorship Program for 1st Year Students

What is the PHL1 Mentorship Program?

The PHL1 program is a program offered by the Department of Philosophy created for the purpose of fostering an interest in philosophy within a community of 1st year students enrolled in PHL100Y1 or PHL101Y1 or a PHL First-Year Foundation Seminar. Students in the PHL1 program will meet bi-weekly on Tuesdays from 3:00pm to 5:00pm in room 100 of the Jackman Humanities Building. The meetings will be led by Peer Mentors who are senior undergraduate philosophy students. Topics and activities for these meetings will vary at the discretion of the PM and APM, but may include the following: workshops on “Reading and Writing Philosophy”, meetings/gatherings with faculty members and grad students, field trips to the ROM, or even just a fun afternoon at Snakes and Lattes.

Why should I join the PHL1 mentorship program?

In the PHL1 program, you will have a chance to meet your fellow classmates outside of your lecture and tutorials times. You will learn about what interests you share with them and have stimulating discussions on philosophy and its applications. You will not only have a chance to meet your peers, but some of our regular faculty, grad students and TAs will also be available at the PHL1 meetings. In addition to these fun activities, we also plan to have activities that will support your learning in PHL100 and PHL101, such as helpful seminars run by the department’s essay clinician. Participation in the PHL1 mentorship program can also be recognized on your co-curricular record.

When is the PHL1 mentorship program?

The PHL1 mentorship program will run on select Tuesdays from 3:00-5:00pm throughout the year. Please note that this is an in-person program. Students will be expected to attend all sessions. As space is limited and the program is very popular, you must explain any absences to the undergraduate administrator if you wish to remain enrolled.

What are the requirements?

You must be a 1st year student registered in PHL100Y1 or PHL101Y1 for the 2024-25 academic year.

How much does the program cost?

There is no cost to you. The Department of Philosophy will be fully funding all activities for the PHL1 mentorship program.

How do I register for the PHL1 mentorship program?

**The deadline to apply for the 2024-25 PHL1 mentorship has passed. However, limited space may still be available. Please contact the undergraduate administrator, Eric Correia by email if you are interested in attending.**
